WHAT TO EXPECT:

Although it varies from patient to patient based on their individual needs, a dental check-up generally consists of a professional cleaning, a comprehensive dental examination, and potentially digital X-rays.

What are the Benefits of Dental Exams?

During a routine check-up, Drs. Knuth and Funke look for signs of tooth decay and cavities. Decay can eventually infect tooth pulp and spread to a tooth’s root.

Warning signs of potential tooth decay are the presence of plaque and tartar, which can also cause gum disease.

You’re evaluated for risk factors associated with bone loss and periodontal disease illnesses. Symptoms of some conditions may be so subtle that only a dentist can see them.

But there is much more to a dental exam than only checking for decay. Biannual check-ups can point to many other issues, including:

  • Oral cancer. Dentists initially diagnose most cancers of the mouth or throat during routine check-ups. The earlier cancer is detected, the better the survival rate.
  •

  • Gum disease. Having deep spaces between your gums and teeth can indicate gum disease, one of the leading causes of tooth loss.
  •

  • Medical conditions. You are checked for bad breath (halitosis), which can be caused by various issues, like an oral yeast infection, lung problems, or diabetes.
  •

It is best to identify potential problems in the early stages while they are easily treatable.

Your family dentists will also check your bite and may administer x-rays or recommend other diagnostic measures.
